Hired by a Harlem gangster (Gunn) to find his kidnaped daughter, private eye John Shaft (Roundtree) must negotiate a delicate balance between Uptown hoodlums and Downtown mobsters while keeping The Man off his back. Stuck in a deadly squeeze play in a mobster turf war Shaft must find the girl, avoid the police and not die in the process. But never fear, if anybody can do, John Shaft can!
